Questions About The 2018 Ballot? Try This Voter Forum In Dearborn

Do you have questions about Michigan's upcoming proposals on the midterm ballot? This forum can help.

DEARBORN, MI — Still need to make your decisions for the Nov. 6 ballot? A local college and the League of Women Voters are holding a program for voters on statewide ballot proposals.

Henry Ford College's Michigan Democracy Institute Consortium is hosting the “Prepare for the Midterm Election” event on Oct. 4. The two-part evening program is free and open to the public in the Dearborn's school's Forfa Auditorium.

The program will include a nonpartisan presentation of the three ballot proposals at 6 p.m.: legalizing recreational marijuana, establishing an independent redistricting commission and expanding voting methods and options.

Judy Karandjeff, president of the League of Women Voters of Michigan, will explain the proposals and answer questions.

“We want voters to be prepared for the election by learning about the candidates and issues before they go to the polls to vote,” said Betsy Cushman, voter service chair of the LWV of Dearborn/Dearborn Heights and a member of the LWV State Board. “At this event, the League doesn’t tell you how to vote, but to offer educational information so you can make your own choices about candidates and issues.”

The program also includes a forum for the six candidates running for the three seats on the county's Circuit Court, which will start at 7 p.m.:

1). John C. Cahalan
2). Delicia Coleman Morson
3). Tracy E. Green
4). Bridget Mary Hathaway
5). Suzette Samuels
6). Regina Thomas

“Elected circuit judges often advance to the state and federal courts,” said Cushman. “This provides voters an excellent opportunity to learn who the candidates are and where they stand on issues. Judges make important decisions which impact many lives. This particular race is the only contested Wayne County-wide judicial race, and this is the time to learn who the candidates are and who comes closest to showing the qualities you look for in a judge.”

Cushman advises voters to sign up for www.Vote411.org, the LWV online voter guide website providing accurate and unbiased voting information.

This event is free and open to the public. For questions or more information, contact the LMV of Dearborn/Dearborn Heights at (313) 278-6476 or lwvddh@gmail.com.
