1. The weather

The National Weather Service predicts sunny skies today, with a high near 40 degrees. Friday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 25 degrees. Saturday morning will be mostly sunny, with a high near 44 degrees.

2. Friday Night Movie: "The Snapper"

The Dexter District Library will screen the movie "The Snapper" today at 6:30 p.m. Set in Ireland, Sharon Curley is a 20-year-old living with her parents and many brothers and sisters. When she gets herself pregnant and refuses to name the father, she becomes the talk of the town. The movie is free and open to the public.

3. Lenten Fish Fry

The Dexter Knights of Columbus will hold its annual fish fry beginning today at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 8265 Dexter-Chelsea Rd. Meals will be available between 4:30-7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $10, kids $6. Drive-through takeout is available for $9. Meals include fried shrimp, pan-fried fish, baked fish and a salad bar and are all-you-can eat.

5. This day in history

March 8, 1950: On this day, Volkswagen, maker of the Beetle automobile, expanded its product offerings to include a microbus, which went into production on this day in 1950. Known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle was the Type 1) or the Transporter, the bus was a favorite mode of transportation for hippies in the U.S. during the 1960s and became an icon of the American counterculture movement.
