2 Teens Carjack DoorDash Driver At Gunpoint In Oakland County, Lead Police Chase: Police

SOUTHFIELD, MI — Two teens are facing charges in connection with a carjacking and police chase that happened in Oakland County last weekend, according to police.

Derek Butler, 18, and a 17-year-old were charged with carjacking and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with the incident.

Butler was placed in the Oakland County Jail with a bond set at $250,000, while the teen was placed at the Children's Village.

If convicted, they face any number of years in prison for carjacking and up to five years in prison for carrying a concealed weapon.

The incident happened in the early morning hours last Saturday at The Lakes Apartments on 12 Mile Road in Southfield, according to police.

Prosecutors said a DoorDash driver was making a delivery in the area when Butler and the teen approached the car.

The two teens then stole the DoorDash driver's 2023 Dodge Charger at gunpoint and sped away, according to prosecutors.

Officers spotted the car shortly later and chased it at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, according to prosecutors.

Officers were able to eventually stop the car in Detroit and arrest the two teens in connection with the incident, according to prosecutors.

Officers also found a firearm in the center console, according to prosecutors.

"Carjackings are more than just a property crime, they traumatize victims and endanger our communities," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said. "The victim was simply doing his job. Violent crime will never be tolerated, and we will hold these defendants accountable."
