5 Things to Know About the Week Ahead in Farmington and Farmington Hills

1. American Red Cross calls for platelet and blood donations.Β 

There is an urgent need for platelet donors, as well as donors with types O negative, B negative and A negative blood, according to an American Red Cross press release. While there are no local blood drives listed at redcrossblood.org, donors can visit the donation center atΒ 31150 Haggerty Rd. in Farmington Hills.Β 

2. Help the Farmington Community Band close out its season.Β 

This popular local ensemble presents a 7 p.m.Β concert MondayΒ at the Walter E. Sundquist Pavilion and Riley Park in downtown Farmington.Β The 80-piece concert band, under the direction of Damien Crutcher, will perform a program ofΒ movie and musical themes, Americana and Sousa marches.Β 

3. Learn how to help save a life.Β 

Take anΒ American Red Cross CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) class fromΒ 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday.Β The class is open to the public, and registration is required.Β Participants must be at least 12 years old. To register,Β contact Diane O’Connell atΒ doconnell@fhgov.comΒ

4. Farmington Public Schools bond election is a week away.

Voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 6, to decide the fate of a controversialΒ $222 million bond issue. If you want an absentee ballot mailed to you, your request must reach your city clerk's office by 2 p.m. on Saturday. Both Farmington and Farmington Hills clerk's offices will be open Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Learn more on the school district's website.Β 

5. Look forΒ carnival discount coupons.Β 

More than 200 Farmington and Farmington Hills businesses now have discounted rideΒ coupons for theΒ annual Family Fun FestΒ carnival hosted by the City of Farmington Hills August 15-18 at Founders Sports Park. You can also get coupons at the Costick Center or online atΒ www.elliottsamusements.com. Admission to the event is free
