Black Friday Market Takes a Step Back to Simpler Time

If the thought of joining the madding crowds at malls and big-box stores is too much, Greens, Gifts and Giving is a slower pace alternative.

If teeming Black Friday crowds aren’t your cup of hot chocolate, the Farmington Farmers & Artisans Market is reopening for the day Friday special event — Greens, Gifts and Giving — reminiscent of what the holidays used to be like in Michigan’s small towns.

The event takes place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday at Walter E. Sundquist Farmington Pavilion and Riley Park, located at Grand River and Grove.

“Greens, Gifts and Giving is an old fashioned village market gathering that’s about Saturday life in a Michigan small town and feeling home for the holidays,” market manager Walt Gajewski told The Detroit Free Press.

“This is a great alternative for those looking to sidestep the malls but who still want to get out and enjoy the holiday weekend in a festive way,” he said.

Restaurateur Dennis Page will serve his award-winning “chili and fixin’s” free of charge to market guests.

“This is that special time of year where I look forward to giving back to the community,” Page said.

To reciprocate, guests are encourage to bring donations of canned goods to be donated to Neighborhood House, a food pantry supported by the Farmington Area Goodfellows charity.

“This is that wonderful time of the year for gathering, giving and gifting,” Alan Maxey, president of the Neighborhood House, said. “(The market) is a fabulous way to find the holiday spirit.”
