Stephanie Mecham and Hafsa Khan looked a little bored as they sat waiting for voters at Warner Upper Elementary School in Farmington Hills Tuesday afternoon.
By 2 p.m., the teens had only distributed 70 ballots for the $222 million Farmington Public Schools bond referendum.
Khan, a 17-year-old senior at North Farmington High, started working the polls three years ago, as a volunteer with the National Honor Society. Now, she does it on her own.
"It gives me something to do in the summer," she said.
This is Mecham's sixth election; she got involved because her brother had worked the polls.
"It's one day, and we get paid for it," the 17-year-old Farmington High graduate said. "It's not that bad, even though it's long."
Mecham said she'll feel more confident when she casts her first ballot, because she has learned about the process. Khan said working the polls also fits well with her intended college major, political science.
