Police said the incident was a random attack.

SOUTHFIELD, MI — A 20-year-old man is facing charges after police said he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl at an Oakland County park last week.

The incident happened at 9:40 p.m. last Wednesday at Eagleman Park in Southfield, according to police.

Police said DeAngelo Steele asked the 12-year-old if he could use her phone to call his mother. He then started walking away with her phone and the girl chased after him, police said.

When she refused, police said Steele started tugging at her waistband and tried pulling down her pants and touching her buttocks.

Police said the two did not know each other, although they both live close to the park.

Steele was charged with unarmed robbery, second-degree criminal sexual conduct and accosting children for immoral purposes. He was placed in jail with a $100,000. If he posts bond, he will have to wear a GPS tether. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 1.

Police believe there may be additional victims and asked anyone with information to call the Southfield Police Department at 248-796-5500.
