New Miss Oakland County Meets Farmington Council

In her first public appearance after winning the crown Saturday, Miss Oakland County 2013 Makayla McCoskey spoke with Farmington city council members during their meeting Monday.

McCoskey, a Farmington Hills native and North Farmington High alum, said she is particularly excited to participate in the Downtown Farmington Founders Festival, which starts Thursday.

"I've been going to Founders Festival ... according to my mother, since I was four months old," she said.

A junior at the University of Michigan (UM), McCoskey is studying cellular and molecular biology, with the ambition of attending medical school and becoming an ophthalmologist. The platform she'll promote during her reign is Unite for Sight, a UM campus organization that raises awareness about eye health.

McCoskey said that every 30 seconds, someone in the world goes blind. Unite for Sight works "to make sure vision care is at the top of people's agenda when it comes to taking care of their health."
