Rain Rushes Farmington 9/11 Patriot Day Ceremony

Threatening weather rushed the speakers, but Farmington and Farmington Hills residents observed Patriot Day Tuesday at the Walter E. Sundquist Farmington Pavilion in downtown Farmington.

Rain and strong winds blew in just minutes after the annual event, organized by American Legion Groves-Walker Post #346, ended with the playing of "Taps" and "Amazing Grace".


The ceremony remembers the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and first responders who risked their lives, and recognizes outstanding local emergency services officers. This year's honorees included Farmington Hills Police Officer Michael Flatt, Farmington Public Safety Fire Marshal Reginald Madeline and Farmington Hills Fire Department Lt. David Feichtner. 

"September 11 changed us," Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus told the small crowd gathered under darkening skies. Despite the attacks, he said, "Patriotism is alive. That's why you are here tonight."
