The holiday marks the birthday and achievements of the slain civil rights leader. King was actually born on Jan. 15, 1929, but the holiday is celebrated on the third Monday of each year.

The campaign for a holiday in his honor began soon after his 1968 assassination, but it wasn’t until 1983 when President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law. The first official observance was in 1986, and some states resisted observing it. In 2000, it was observed for the first time by all 50 states.
