Fenton Soccer Clinches Share of Metro

Tigers defeat Swartz Creek 3-1 Monday.

The soccer team clinched at least a share of the Metro League title Monday with a 3-1 victory against Swartz Creek.

The Tigers are 8-1 in the Metro and 15-5 overall. Lapeer East is 5-1 in the conference and has a chance to catch Fenton to share the crown.

Mackenzie Murphy got the scoring started as she netted a free kick after Allison Cialkoszewski was taken down on a breakaway. Murphy’s shot went into the low far post around the wall 10 minutes into the game to put Fenton up 1-0.

Swartz Creek scored with 15 minutes left in the half, launching a 40-yard moon shot that the wind blew into the goal, tying the game 1-1 at halftime.

Fenton’s Murphy then scored again eight minutes into the second half on a free kick from 35 yards out that proved to be the game winner and Metro League title clinching goal.

“It was a rocket that not many college goalies would save,” Fenton coach Matt Sullivan said.

Murphy then had a hand in another goal as she sent a cross into the middle 15 minutes later to the far post where Kaliegh Keyandwy headed the ball into the net.

Alyssa Ostrowski and Dani Garza shared the duties in net.

“I am really happy for the girls,” Sullivan said. “They worked so hard this preseason and in the morning before school to push each other and make each other tougher, trusting that it would win us a championship. I am so proud of my girls, they deserve to be called Metro champs”

Fenton hosts Birmingham Seaholm at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
