Fire Chief Shares Safety Tips After Report Says Toddler Burned by Oven

Flint Police Operations posted that a 1-year-old boy was transported from Fenton's McLaren Urgent Clinic to the hospital after suffering severe burns Thursday night.

Flint Police Operations, a group that monitors police and fire scanner traffic and posts on Facebook and Twitter, posted around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night that a 1-year-old boy who had tried to climb in an oven was transported from McLaren Urgent Care on Owen Road in Fenton to Hurley Medical Center in Flint with severe burns to his chest, abdomen and palm of his hands.

The post had no other details and Fenton Patch was unable to find any more information.

Chief Ryan Volz said children don’t always understand the danger of heat and fires and its best to keep a very close eye on them in the kitchen and near fireplaces.

“They get into everything,” he said.

Volz said he has responded to incidents where children have thrown toys into the oven that caused small fires. He said the microwave is another dangerous place where children have been known to put items. Volz added older stoves with knobs children can reach and also older gas fireplaces can also be dangerous for children.

“You just have to be watching them all the time around that equipment. They’ll throw forks in the microwave, push all kinds of buttons. You just have to watch them,” Volz said.
