Mott Community College: MCC Announces 2021 Distinguished Alumni And Outstanding Retiree

Three outstanding Mott Community College alumni and an MCC retiree received the MCC 2021 Distinguished Alumni and Outstanding Retiree Awards at a dinner Thursday, Nov. 4 in the MCC Event Center on the main campus in Flint.

Each year, MCC recognizes individuals who have shown extraordinary service and exemplary leadership in a variety of areas. This year’s honorees include Alumni Dr. Dorothy Elizabeth Jordan, Carol Todd Robinson, Joe Wilson. Jennie Welliver was honored as MCC’s Outstanding Retiree recipient this year.

The Distinguished Alumni honorees are selected by a screening committee based upon their outstanding achievements as role models, visionary leaders and community servants. Outstanding retirees are selected by the MCC Executive Cabinet. In addition, the individuals honored as Distinguished Alumni will have their photographs displayed in the Alumni Hall of the Event Center where all previous honorees are featured.

2021 Distinguished Alumni

Dr. Elizabeth Jordan 

Dr. Dorothy Elizabeth Jordan graduated from Mott Community College in 1989 with an Applied Science in Child Development.  In 1990, she became the first person to ever receive the Honors Associate in Applied Science, High Honors. She graduated from UM-Flint in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree, earned a master’s degree in Child Development, followed by a doctorate degree in Family and Child Ecology.

Dr. Jordan is the Founder of Charity United Methodist Montessori & Child Development Daycare Center.  She also served as Director of Curriculum for the UAW-GM Child Development Center, Executive Director of the Michigan Home-Based Child Care Council, adjunct lecturer in the UM-Flint and MCC, and  Education Director for Early Childhood Programs for Genesee Intermediate School District.

Her volunteerism includes the American Montessori Society, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Pierians Inc., Genesee County Medical Society Alliance, and the MCC Early Childhood Advisory Committee.

Carol Todd Robinson 

Carol Todd Robinson attended Mott Community College and transferring to the UM-Flint to earn a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She received her master’s degree from Jackson State University in guidance counseling. At MCC she was active in the choir and the Junior Urban League career explorers.

Her career began as a GED teacher for the Flint Urban League, followed by Raymond Hinds Community College where she worked as an academic counselor.  In 2004 she began working with the Jackson Public School District as a parent coordinator.  She supervised fifty school Parent Resource Centers and served as a compliance monitor for Federal Programs until her retirement.

Her volunteerism includes the NAACP, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She is also the founder and president of the first Minority Business Phone Directory of the state of Mississippi.          

Joe Wilson 

Joe Wilson graduated Mott Community College when it was Genesee Community College. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Police Administration from Wayne State University, followed by a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. Joe served the Flint Police Department as a patrol officer and detective, and was promoted to sergeant, lieutenant, and captain. He was awarded the Meritorious Citation for Life Saving, the highest honor from the FPD.

In 1981, Joe was hired as the first Director of Criminal Justice at MCC, responsible for developing the curriculum and hiring faculty. He was integral in instituting the Ferris State University extension program, and has been an adjunct instructor at MCC since 1985. Additionally, he has been faculty at Ferris State, Michigan State, UM-Flint, and Saginaw Valley State universities.

His third career started when he was elected County Sheriff, a position held for four terms. His final career is as a security consultant.

2021 Outstanding Retiree Award

Jennie Welliver 

Jennie Welliver retired from Mott Community College in 2020 after 30 years of service. She was a full time faculty member in the position of Academic Success Specialist in the Counseling and Student Development Division, and also a adjunct Communications instructor in the Humanities Division.

Jennie reached out and motivated students in her role as a full time academic advisor. She worked tirelessly with individual students to achieve success at Mott, and prepared many of them to transfer on to university to pursue their personal career goals.

Jennie brought a positive attitude to work every day, limitless energy, a passion to learn, and a willingness to engage with colleagues to meet the needs of Mott Community College students.
