Mott Community College will collaborate with UM-Flint to bring “Hostile Terrain94,” an interactive, public art project to the Flint area. It is designed to raise awareness about the thousands of immigrants who have lost their lives crossing the Sonoran Desert since 2000. The exhibit will be on display at the Flint Farmer’s Market Nov. 13 to 27, as well simultaneously around the world in over 94 locations.

“Hostile Terrain94” invites attendees to fill out and pin toe tags on a wall-sized map of the US-Mexico border. Each toe tag represents an immigrant who has died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert, and is placed on the map at the location of this person’s death.

The Flint exhibition starts with an opening event Nov. 12 from 5-8:30 p.m. in the Kiva on the UM-Flint campus, including a reception from 5-6 p.m., a participatory art event titled "Status" by Dr. Jjenna Andrews, an interactive public art discussion, and a screening of "Border South" at 6 p.m., followed by a Q/A with director Raúl O. Paz Pastrana.

MCC students and faculty have been integral in bringing this exhibit to the Flint area. Debra Gibes, Coordinator of the International Institute and Service Learning office, collaborated with UM-Flint and coordinated participation at MCC. The MCC Feminist League, and their adviser Katie Kiacz, participated in filling out toe tags for the project. Andrews, Fine Arts faculty, and her students will help with installation of the exhibit at the Flint Farmer’s Market.
