Police: Men Claiming to be City Employees Steal from Elderly Couple

Police advise residents to ask for identification, call 911.

Fenton police are warning residents about a scam that left an elderly couple missing an undisclosed amount of money.

Chief Rick Aro said police received a call from the 900 block of Silver Parkway around 11 a.m. Wednesday from homeowners who reported that two men, who told them they were city of Fenton employees, had pried open a safe in their home.

Aro said the residents reported the two men said they were with the city and were there to survey the residents' home on Monday. Aro said the residents were suspicious and were not going to let the men in the home, but the men handed one of the victims a cell phone and told him to call to check. During that time, the residents reported, the men entered the home.

Police believe one man distracted the residents, while the other may have searched the home looking for valuables.

Aro said it wasn’t until Wednesday the residents discovered their safe had been pried open and money was missing.

The residents reported the suspects were two males in their 20s and drove a small white car.

Aro said city of Fenton employees do not survey homes.

“If anyone comes to your door claiming to be a city employee, they should have identification or a uniform,” Aro said. “If you are suspicious, call 911 and we will sort it out.”
