UPDATED: 81 Without Power in Ferndale as Remnants of Hurricane Sandy Head West

Update: The number of DTE customers in Ferndale without power was up to 81 as of late Tuesday evening, according to a DTE outage map.

Trouble with a transformer is listed as the cause of at least one of the Ferndale outages, with 41 customers affected in the area of Allen and Pearson Streets.

Tuesday: Gusting winds and rain whipped Ferndale overnight into Tuesday morning, leaving small pockets of power outages throughout the area as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy spun westward.

According to a DTE outage map, there were 77 customers in Ferndale without power as of Tuesday morning. Other southeast Michigan communities such as Rochester Hills and Oakland Township experienced significant power outages as the storm moved through, with hundreds of customers without power.

A wind advisory was in effect through 1 p.m. Tuesday and a hazardous weather outlook was in place through the evening for southeast Michigan, including Oakland County, according to the National Weather Service. A wind advisory means sustained winds of up to 30 miles per hour or gusts of 45 mph are expected, the forecasting agency says.

The utility said Monday that it anticipated outages if southeast Michigan experienced wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour, as the National Weather Service forecast, as the far reaches of Hurricane Sandy lashed the area. The so-called "Frankenstorm" made landfall Monday on the East Coast, leaving massive destruction, millions without power and at least 16 deaths in its wake, according to cnn.com.

In Ferndale, showers, gusting winds and high temperatures in the mid-40s are expected to continue through Halloween on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
