Local Kitchen and Bar Closes

A popular Ferndale restaurant closed Sunday.

FERNDALE, MI — Less than two weeks after losing Como’s Pizza, at least temporarily, Ferndale’s popular Local Kitchen and Bar closed Sunday. Owner Brian D. Siegel announced the move on Facebook, but didn’t give reasons why.

“It is with a measure of sadness and an abundance of gratefulness that I am reporting in this Facebook post that Local Kitchen and Bar completed its last meal service at 2 p.m. today October 1, 2017,” he wrote. “Local began as a discussion with my good friend Rick Halberg that blossomed into a restaurant that deeply cared about providing really good food and service.

“While there were ups and downs, I am so thankful for all of the friendships that we built along the way.”

Como’s Pizza was closed last month by the Oakland County Health Department for issues including cleanliness, and insects, among others, the Detroit News reported. The department also closed the restaurant in September 2016.

Located at 344 W. Nine Mile, Local Kitchen and Bar had earned a solid reputation among diners. On the review site Yelp, patrons rated the restaurant three-and-a-half stars out of five after more than 300 reviews.

“Lovely restaurant in downtown Ferndale, which offered us much needed respite from the heat of the DIY festival,” wrote Christine B. of Belleville in a Sept. 27 review. She gave the restaurant three stars. “The location is good, and the restaurant is fairly large. The brunch menu offers a perfect selection (I love smaller menus) of cocktails and food. We had the polenta and the hash. Both were good, flavorful.”

Not all reviews were as kind. Jillian F. of Royal Oak gave Local Kitchen just one star in an Aug. 14 review.
“Terrible service (the worst you've had, I promise) and a very underwhelming brunch,” she wrote. “The items sound fantastic (when a taco meets a waffle) but don't be fooled, even the biscuits are bad.”
