Oakland County Mom, 12-Year-Old Son Found Dead In Home: Police

HAZEL PARK, MI — Police believe a mother and her 12-year-old son were killed inside their Oakland County home Monday.

The incident happened at a home on Berdeno Avenue, near Interstate 75 and 9 Mile Road in Hazel Park, according to police.

Investigators didn't say how the 41-year-old woman and her 12-year-old son died, but noted they sustained injuries from "apparent trauma."

Family members of the victims told WXYZ they believe a man who was in a relationship with the woman may be responsible.

"We got some suspicions," a family member told the news station. "Yeah, he called us while we were here on the scene...basically saying he was shopping earlier and he didn’t have - he wasn’t around. We all kept telling her to leave, leave him alone because it wasn't the right situation."

Hazel Park Schools said the boy was a student within the district. They also said they would make counselors and mental health professionals available to students affected by their classmate's death.

"Please take a moment to hug your children and remind them how much they are loved," a statement from the school district read. "Encourage them to be especially compassionate and supportive of their classmates, as you never know what someone else is going through."
