HAZEL PARK, MI — A Hazel Park high school student was arrested Thursday after officers found a handgun inside the student's backpack in a classroom, according to police.

Officers then searched the student's bag and locker and did not find a gun, according to police.
After interviewing the student, officials told him and his father that he would not be allowed back in school while the investigation continued, according to police.

That's when the student requested items from his locker, according to police.
An officer walked with the student and gave him his items from the locker, according to police.
The student also said he had a backpack in a classroom, which the officer grabbed and searched, finding the handgun inside, according to police.
Officers then arrested the student and initially took him to the Hazel Park Police Station before placing him at the Oakland County Children’s Village, according to police.
A police K-9 and officers searched the building to ensure there was no further threat, according to police.
Officials said there will be an increased police presence at the school "out of an abundance of caution."
Officials said information will be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor for consideration of charges once the investigation is complete.
