Police said the two men did not know each other.

WARREN, MI β€” An Oakland County man has been charged in connection with a deadly gas station shooting, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office.

Zaner was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died, according to police.

Police said Williams walked into the gas station and got into an argument with Zaner. Williams then left the gas station and returned a few minutes later with a gun, according to police.

Williams then hit Zaner in the face, sparking a fight between the two of them that ended when Williams shot Zaner in the chest, according to police.

Police said Williams and Zaner did not know each other.

With the help of surveillance video, officers identified Williams and arrested him in connection with the shooting roughly 12 hours later at a nearby hotel, according to police.

"What began as a simple argument has ended in senseless loss of life. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and continues to tear families apart, leaving lives shattered. We will work tirelessly to ensure justice is served," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement.

Family members created a GoFundMe page to help with Zaner's funeral costs.
