Flint City Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer won't seek re-election (flintbeat.com) — Flint residents in the 8th Ward will see a new name on the ballot next year, as Councilman Dennis Pfeiffer says he won’t seek re-election when his term ends in November 2026. Pfeiffer, elected in 2021, announced his decision on Facebook, thanking constituents and saying he hopes it opens the door for new voices while he explores other ways to serve the city.
   

2. Genesee County reduces budget for celebration of nation's 250th anniversary (mlive.com) — Genesee County commissioners have slashed funding for this summer’s America 250 celebrations from $250,000 to $50,000, affecting plans that center on Crossroads Village near Flint. The board also expanded the planning commission, adding Explore Flint & Genesee, Sloan Museum, and local leaders, while leaving the door open to request more funding once event plans and sponsorships are clearer.
   

3. Mission-driven Weighill taking the reins as leader of Genesee County government (mlive.com) — Genesee County’s new Board of Commissioners chair, Dale Weighill of Flint Township, is stepping into a powerful role that will shape priorities like broadband expansion, Genesee Valley Center redevelopment, and court consolidation. A former Flint councilman and Mott Community College leader, he’s emphasizing bipartisan cooperation and long-term community development that Flint and county residents will feel in daily life.
   

4. Rx Kids Program Continues To Expand In Southwest Michigan (wkfr.com) — Flint’s pioneering Rx Kids cash-support program for new parents has now helped nearly 5,000 local families and inspired a major statewide expansion. Backed by a $250 million bipartisan investment, the initiative that began in Flint in 2024 is adding new Southwest Michigan communities, strengthening the case for eventually making this kind of support available to more Michigan parents.
   

5. Flint City's Donavan Phillip wins the MAC Hermann Award for NCAA Soccer's top player (midmichigannow.com) — A standout from the Flint City Bucks program has just been named the top player in NCAA Division I men’s soccer. Donavan “Gusto” Phillip, who powered Flint City to a Central Conference title and USL2 honors, captured the prestigious 2025 MAC Hermann Trophy after a dominant season at NC State and is now headed to MLS with the Colorado Rapids.
