- Former Democratic state representative David LaGrand announced he will be running to serve as the next mayor of Grand Rapids. LaGrand, who represented the city for six years before being term-limited out of office last year, says as mayor, he plans to prioritize housing affordability around the city, public safety, and government transparency. LaGrand was previously elected to the Grand Rapids City Commission and the Grand Rapids Public School Board. He also owns and manages Long Road Distillers. (WZZM)
- Kent County Sheriff's Office is being sued by a group of Muslim rights activists after forcing a Black Muslim woman to remove her hijab for a booking photo. In April, 21-year-old Jannah Hague was arrested following a domestic altercation at her home, and according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations Michigan Chapter, the sheriff's office violated Hague's religious rights as well as their own policy. The photo was released on the department's website, although Hague was released without any charges. (Metro Times)
- On Saturday, Jun. 3, Sinas Dramis Law Firm will be bringing back its "Lids for Kids" bike helmet giveaway event at Garfield Park. The event will run from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and aims to protect a child's head from injuries, showcase the importance of bike safety, and provide young riders with a properly fitting helmet.
