This Grand Rapids Mom's Transformation Inspired Others: How She Did It

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Moms do so much for everyone around them. We try to celebrate them all year long, but Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to shout it from the rooftops and post it on Patch: Mom rocks!

Here at Patch we've launched an initiative to help recognize the awesome moms and mom figures in communities like yours.

This submission comes from Crystal Fewtrell who nominated Beverly Lee of Grand Rapids.

What makes your mom extra special?

My mom has transformed herself late in the game (better late than never!), inspiring hundreds of others to do the same. In 2019, she decided to make the shift and do whatever it would take to get out of her mobile scooter. By choosing her thoughts, and believing she could do it, she has managed to drop and maintain over 100 lbs gone since 2021! She has does this by:

1. Commitment to a permanent lifestyle change (plan ahead);
2. Accountable for choices made (tracking what she eats);
3. Mind (being in control of her thoughts)!

Another thing that makes my mom extra special is her passion for teaching. She worked as a math teacher for over 30 years, helping those who wanted to throw in the towel when it came to learning math (myself included) with her funny memory aids and positive attitude.

She gave birth to and raised five kids (no easy feat) with the help of my amazing Korean Grandmother, ChangSoon and my dad. Military life took us all over the world, and she always made us feel at home with her lovingly prepared delicious home-cooked meals. Always having family or friends over for dinner, my mom always made sure to include those who were alone for the holidays.

She would spend her weekends helping seniors in our community, driving them to the grocery store. I had the pleasure of coming along many times. For about four years, she gave up her home to help a family in her community, living a nomadic lifestyle with my Dad.

My mom has a big, youthful heart, open to learning and growing and for this, I celebrate her!

Why do you feel your mom deserves the spotlight?

I believe my mom deserves the spotlight because her example has and continues to help so many people.
