Contractor Killed After Construction Collapse Buries Him Alive

The man, who has not yet been identified, was trapped by two consecutive collapses.

Investigators at the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration are continuing to review the events leading to the death of the owner of a Sterling Heights contracting company Wednesday, MLive reports.

The 59-year-old victim was working on a trench, in which the crew had dug 20 feet into the ground through heavy clay, when a collapse buried him around noon. Coworkers and emergency responders scrambled to free him, some using only their hands, before a second collapse around 2 p.m. led to his death.

Al Fincham, Grosse Pointe Woods administrator and police commissioner, confirmed the man’s death around 2:30 p.m.
