Detroit Man Charged with Stalking Anita Baker
The 24-year-old man has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation before returning to the City of Grosse Pointe Court later this month.
police arrested a 24-year-old Detroit man about 3 a.m. Tuesday outside the home of Anita Baker after she called police because he refused to leave and banged repeatedly on her front door while singing to her.
Dwon Darnell Thompson is charged with two misdemeanor counts: stalking and trespassing. If convicted of stalking, he faces up to one year in prison, up to $1,000 in fines and up to five years of probation. The trespassing count carries a penalty of up to 30 days in jail.
According to a police report from the responding officer, Baker—the Grammy Award-winning singer—said she and her son repeatedly asked Thompson to leave after he showed up at their home about 3 a.m. He refused, and the banging and the singing continued for 20 minutes, prompting her to call police.

Baker told responding officers Thompson has been harassing her for about three months. She first saw him pacing in front of her home on the street and then he's followed her around repeatedly while she's shopping in the Village, telling clerks who are helping her to tell her that he wants to sing for her.
She's told Thompson to leave her alone at least five times before he arrived outside her front door on Tuesday.

Thompson was arraigned in the City of Grosse Pointe Court Wednesday and appeared before the judge again on Thursday for a pre-trial hearing. Judge Russell Ethridge ordered him to undergo a psychological evaluation and then return to court for a final pre-trial hearing Oct. 20.
During the final pre-trial, typically a decision is made about whether the defendant will plead guilty in the case or take it to trial. The results of the evaluation will likely influence any sentence imposed.
The relationship, if any, between Baker and Thompson was not immediately available Friday. Thompson reported to the judge that he works at a business in the Village, however.
