GPN, GPS Tennis Teams Gear Up for Regionals

Grosse Pointe South, Grosse Pointe North and University Liggett tennis teams all look for a return trip to the state finals.

The tennis teams at and will host regional tournaments this week.

Grosse Pointe North will hold a Division 2 regional on Friday at and .

In addition to the Norsemen, Lakeviewβ€”coming off a second-place finish at the MAC Silver Division tournamentβ€”also will compete at the regional tournament.

Other teams at the GPN regional are Detroit Denby, Detroit King, Detroit Northwestern, Detroit Pershing, East Detroit, Hazel Park, Sterling Heights and Warren Woods-Tower.

Meanwhile, Grosse Pointe South will host a Division 1 regional tournament on Thursday.

The Blue Devils, who finished eighth at last year’s state finals, tied for first in the MAC Red Division this spring. They also are No. 6 in the state in the latest Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association poll.

Teams at the Grosse Pointe South regional are Detroit Mumford, Fraser, Southfield-Lathrup, Royal Oak, Sterling Heights Ford II, Sterling Heights Stevenson, Troy, Troy Athens, Warren Cousino and Warren-Mott.

In Division 4, will compete at the regional at Almont. University Liggett is No. 10 in the MHSTCA poll, and the Knights tied for ninth at last year’s Division 4 state finals.

Other teams in the Almont regional are Algonac, Armada, Clarkston Everest Collegiate, Flint Southwestern Academy, Flint Powers Catholic, Imlay City, Lake Fenton, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and Richmond.

Richmond is No. 8 in the state, and Notre Dame Prep is No. 9.

The top two teams from each regional (as well as any other team recording at least 18 points) will advance to the state championship.
