Grosse Pointe Farms Designer Honored with Room at Luxury Hotel

A meeting room at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham will be named in honor of an interior designer who was murdered outside his Grosse Pointe Farms home last spring. Daniel E. Clancy helped oversee the renovation of the toney in 2012, and the hotel is naming the private, multi-use room to honor his contributions.

Clancy, 69, a nationally sought-after interior designer, was bound with duct tape and stabbed outside his home on Voltaire Place on March 6, and died of his injuries last week. David Scott Corzilius, a 49-year-old handyman from Warren, has been charged in Clancy’s murder.

Steve Kalczynski, managing director of the Townsend, said the room will reflect Clancy’s hallmark elegance, class and taste.

“If you knew Dan, he was a great man to work with,” Kalczynski told The Birmingham Eccentric. “He was a true visionary when it came to design.”

“So there’s lot of emotional attachment to it,” Kalczynski said. “We wanted to do something to honor him — it was his vision that gave the Townsend Hotel a modern look and feel. We just thought it was the right thing to do.”

With marble floors, walnut-paneled walls and Baker blown-glass chandeliers, The Clancy Room reflects the opulence the designer brought to his project. The room, which opened to the public on Saturday, replaces the Corner Bar. which closed in May.

Clancy was affiliated with Franklin-based Perlmutter-Freiwald Inc. interior design site, and his work has been featured in leading national publications such as House Beautiful, Florida Design, Palm Beach Magazine, W Magazine, Travel and Leisure, and Hour Magazine. Detroit Monthly Magazine named him “Designer of the Year”. Clancy has also appeared on HGTV.
