Major Gas Leak Puts Grosse Pointe North High On Lockdown

Grosse Pointe North High School is on temporary lockdown and surrounding neighborhood residents are being evacuated.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS, MI — Grosse Pointe North High School is on temporary lockdown and surrounding neighborhood residents are being evacuated for a major gas line break. It’s the third leak in recent weeks. The Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety said residents can seek shelter in the high school's auditorium.

Staff will be on site near the soccer field/tennis court to direct residents inside, officials said in a news release. The affected area is Morningside Drive between Vernier Road and Hidden Lane, the Detroit Free Press reported.

On May 9, DTE crews hit a gas line while digging, and an April 27 leak caused the evacuation of homes and businesses on Mack Avenue near Manchester Boulevard. That leak was caused by a DTE subcontractor crew doing concrete repair that accidently hit a 60-pound gas main.
