Police Blotter: 2 Car Thefts, Drunken Driving Arrests

The following information is gathered from the Public Safety Departments of the Grosse Pointes. Arrests do not indicate convictions.

police are investigating the theft of a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice from the 200 block of Ridgemont Road about 5 a.m. Aug. 14. The 21-year-old owner told police he saw a man driving his car east on Beaupre and told officers he had several items inside the car when it was stolen, including birth certificates and tattoo equipment valued at $300. He also gave police a detailed description of the car–which has a marijuana leaf on the steering wheel, a dent on the driver's side rear door and a back passenger window stuck in the down position. A patrol officer searched the area for the car but could not find it immediately, according to a report. 

In another unrelated case, police are investigating the theft of a 2010 Toyota Tacoma from the 14900 block of Kercheval on the afternoon of Aug. 8. The truck was parked on the street about noon and then was discovered missing at 1:30 p.m. The responding officer did not find broken glass or other evidence at the scene, according to a report.

Drunken Driving Arrests

Grosse Pointe Farms police arrested a 23-year-old Eastpointe man Aug. 14 shortly before 1 a.m. for drunken driving after receiving a call about his driving. Police said the officer witnessed the man weaving his car between lanes on Moross and Chalfonte and found he had slurred speech, smelled of alcohol, glassy eyes and was slow in answering questions. The man had a 0.18 percent blood alcohol content and was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to a report.

In an unrelated case, Farms police arrested a 48-year-old Chandler, AZ, man for drunken driving Aug. 13 after stopping him for driving 44 mph in a 25 mph zone. Police said he refused to complete any field sobriety tests and to take a Breathalyzer test. He smelled of alcohol and had glassy eyes. He was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, cited for speeding and his car was towed from the scene, according to a report.

Thefts

police are investigating the theft of dental prototypes developed by a dentist who resides in the Park but has a practice outside of the Pointes. The dentist contacted police after other dentists began contacting him about the prototypes, explaining that a man he had been working with during the development was trying to sell them the prototypes. The dentist told Park officers he believes the man he's been working with stole the prototypes from his home and is trying to pass them off as his own through their sale. The dentist either was seeking or had already obtained patents for the prototypes, Detective David Loch said.

Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating the theft of a battery from a pop-up trailer parked in the backyard of a home in the 800 block of Barrington Road. The theft happened between July 4 and Aug. 12.

Property Damage Reports

Grosse Pointe Park police are investigating the report of two rear windows that were broken at a house in the 1000 block of Berkshire. The windows were broken with metal between 6 and 10 p.m. Aug. 11, according to a report. 

A 52-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms man reported that vandals broke tree branches, broke three flowerpots and damaged shrubs with large landscaping rocks sometime Friday while he was out of town. The resident told officers his neighbors spotted the damage and alerted him. He estimated the damage to his home, in the 200 block of Ridge Road, to be about $300, according to a report.

A 52-year-old Grosse Pointe Farms resident reported damage to seven solar landscape lights in her yard overnight from Aug. 12 to Aug. 13. The woman, who lives in the 60 block of Cloverly Road, estimated the damage at about $210 and told police she is unsure of who damaged the lights, according to a report. 

A resident called police Aug. 16 after an argument with a contractor trimming trees. The resident, who lives in the 500 block of Lake Shore Road, told officers he felt threatened by the worker after he asked for the name of the company. The worker said the resident pushed him and assaulted him. Another worker said he heard the argument but wasn't aware how it started or who did what. The resident wanted to seek compensation from the company for damage to the flower beds, according to a report.
