Social media. It's a phrase uttered on a fairly regular basis these days. Individuals, businesses, organizations, elected officials, and even media use social media.

Twitter--the social media that allows users to post 140 characters or less--allows Grosse Pointe Patch to keep watch on what's going on locally and far away. It's also a quick way to pass informaiton along to the more than 500 followers. 

Twitter users can be as active or inactive as they wish. Some use social media more in an observation manner than to update others on what they are doing or working on. Here are some highlights of those that Grosse Pointe Patch follows who are most active:

• @petedame tweets about happenings in the City of Grosse Pointe. Dame is the city manager and shares information not only about events in the City but also behind the scenes work he and others are putting forth. 
• @TheGPPL tweets about the Grosse Pointe Public Library. Tweets include information about books, reading, events, services, library news and more. 
• @GPSchools tweets about, you guessed it, Grosse Pointe Public Schools. Tweets focus on events, student achievement, school cancellations, district and teacher news.
• @brendan_p_walsh tweets about schools, education policy, research, technology and his own blog. As a Grosse Pointe Public Schools Board Trustee, Walsh focuses on any topic affecting schools, teachers and students. 
• There are several local teachers as well: @GPNEcon10; @GPEA_Teach; @thenerdyteacher; and @MR_ABUD. There are some Grosse Pointe teachers who use Twitter for their classrooms and likely dozens more but this is just a sampling. 
• @NeighborhoodClb tweets about events and happenings from the Neighborhood Club. Topics include registration dates for recreational sports and classes as well as the many recent and upcoming changes for the organization. 
• @LWVGrossePointe tweets about politics, local, state and beyond. The League of Women Voters Grosse Pointe is an organization that encourages voter participation in government and elections. The nonpartisan, nonprofit group serves Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods. With election season upon us, their busy season has begun.
• @SenBertJohnson tweets about Michigan Senate happenings. As Michigan's second district senator, Johnson represents several communities, including Harper Woods and the Grosse Pointes. 
• @lauriearora tweets about life in Grosse Pointe Park. Laurie Arora is a councilwoman for Grosse Pointe Park and very active in the Pointes. She is also a small business owner and an active supporter for the Grosse Pointe Public Library. 
• @RepHansenClarke tweets about being a U.S. Congressman and representing the 13th district of Michigan. Clarke includes inititives he's pursuing as well news from the Capitol and from other elected officials.
