Young Hartland Runners Go the Distance

Here at Patch, we love to regularly spotlight young people in the Hartland community who are successful, talented and just plain awesome.

But we need your help. We know those kids are out there doing great things for and in the community, so let us know about them so we can help spread the word.

Today we feature two local elementary students who finished first and second in their age groups running the 10K distance during the Memorial Day Run.

  • Introduction: Madison Hahn, a second grader at Creekside Elementary and Grace Carlson a fourth grader at Creekside, both ran the 10K, where the two young girls took first and second in their age group. Although both girls had run several 5K's in the past, this was the first 10K for both of them.
  • Achievement: Grace, age 10, finished her race with a time of 1:20.46 and took first place in her age group. 7-year-old Madison finished with a time of 1:23.48.
  • Keys to awesomeness: When asked why she considered herself to be awesome, 7-year-old Madison said it was because she tried really hard to accomplish a goal that she really wanted. She also hopes by her doing something that she was a little afraid to do, that other people will not be afraid to set a goal and accomplish it, too. Her mother, Denise, added that she likes to say her daughter's awesome because she never let's anybody steal her awesome from her.
  • 10-year-old Grace said she was awesome because she was determined to run a 10k and she did it. It made her feel proud and that's why she is awesome.
Do you know a local young person who deserves applause because he or she shovels the elderly neighbors' driveway? Or perhaps athletic achievements are worth sharing. Everyone deserves attention, and we want to tell these stories. Email nominations to local editor Tatum Ryan at tatum.ryan@patch.com, provide the information shown above and include a photo with names and ages.
