Here are the top three stories today in Lansing-East Lansing:

  1. Jersey Mike's, a popular chain sandwich shop, celebrated its anniversary with the 13th annual Day of Giving yesterday (Mar. 29). As part of the day, the Jersey Mike's locations in Lansing and Okemos announced that they would donate 100 percent of all proceeds to the Gift of Life charity foundation. The owner of Lansing's Jersey Mike's, Shelly Roye, said of the donation to the chosen charity, "It’s my understanding that there are almost 2,500 Michiganders on the wait list right now for an organ, so hopefully this brings awareness to our charity, and we raise money to help them with their cost." (WLNS)
  2. Michigan State University's spring graduation ceremony will feature Dr. Anthony Fauci as the headline speaker during commencement ceremonies on Friday, May 5. Additionally, Fauci, who is known as the former chief medical adviser to the U.S. president during the COVID-19 pandemic, will receive an honorary doctorate in humanities. Other national leaders who are scheduled to speak during the event include Jill Hruby, the undersecretary for nuclear security for the U.S. Department of Energy and administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, and Lisa Cook, who was the first Black woman to hold a position on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. (Lansing State Journal)
  3. Michigan State University is planning to reopen the MSU Union on Monday at 8 a.m. but will keep the food court closed. Berkley Hall will continue to remain closed throughout the rest of the spring semester as announced by the university in February. Both the Union and Berkely Hall were locations of the Feb. 13 active shooting incident, and the Union will feature memorials and tributes to the victims of the incident on the third floor in the Lake Huron Room. Officials said of the opening, "The MSU Union team looks forward to welcoming those who are ready to use the space once more, knowing that for some, more time may be needed and for others, feelings might shift once on site."
