The 18-year-old woman, who was driving the 2013 Chevy, was also taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Investigators do not know why the driver of the 2011 Chevy crossed over the centerline, and said it appears there was no braking before impact. They also said neither child was properly restrained and that there was only one car seat in the car.

"What we don’t know is why the at fault driver crossed over into the on coming lanes. A blood draw was taken as part of the investigation. It is particularly heartbreaking when a preventable crash occurs on a holiday. It is even worse when a child loses their life. Please make sure to wear your seatbelt and that your children are properly restrained every trip," Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw said.
