How We Decorate Our Easter Eggs

Our family tradition of dyeing eggs changed this year.

During the Easter season, my family and I love coloring eggs to celebrate the holiday. Throughout the years, we've experimented with food coloring to get the best results for our eggs. This year, I read an article from The Old Farmer's Almanac that used natural dyes for egg coloring and we decided to try it out.

We first made the brine/dye water (Remember to be careful when making your own--you will be boiling the brine!):

  • 1 cup of warm water
  • 1 teaspoon of vinegar

    My family normally used food coloring to dye our cooled hard boiled eggs. But this recipe called for different ingredients:

    • 2 teaspoons ground turmeric for yellowing coloring
    • 1 cup shredded beets for pink coloring
    • 1 cup chopped purple cabbage or blueberries for blue coloring
    • 1 cup red onion skins for red or purple coloring
    • 1 bag of black tea for brown coloring
    • 1 cup chopped yellow onion skins for orange coloring


    We kept adding more coloring to make the color we liked. The longer the egg was sitting in the dye the darker the egg color. But overall, the natural coloring does give the eggs a softer color once they dried.
