Central City Health Launches Mobile Healthcare Unit to Serve Underserved Communities in Detroit and Wayne Co.

New mobile unit delivers primary care, dental, behavioral health, and social services directly to Detroit neighborhoods

Central City Health has officially launched its new Mobile Healthcare Unit (MHU), a critical step in expanding access to high-quality, integrated healthcare for residents in some of Detroit and Wayne County’s most underserved neighborhoods.

The MHU brings primary care, dental, behavioral health, and community health services directly to individuals and families who face barriers to traditional healthcare access. Designed to deliver care where it is most needed, the unit focuses on high-need areas such as project-based voucher housing sites (PBVs), homeless shelters, community centers, schools, and nonprofit partner locations.

“Our Mobile Healthcare Unit ensures that access to quality care isn’t determined by a ZIP code,” said Dr. Kimberly Farrow-Felton, President and CEO of Central City Health. “We are bringing comprehensive, compassionate services into the heart of communities that have historically been overlooked. This unit is not just a vehicle for care. It’s a vehicle for change.”

Services provided by the MHU include:

  • Primary Care: Preventive screenings, physical exams, and chronic disease monitoring, including blood pressure and diabetes screenings.
  • Dental Care: On-site cleanings and oral health education delivered by a licensed dental hygienist.
  • Behavioral Health: Engagement and education around mental wellness, harm reduction (including naloxone distribution), and referrals to case management and counseling.
  • Community Health: Assistance with Medicaid enrollment, benefit navigation, and essential needs distribution (e.g., hygiene kits, bus passes), led by Central City Health Community Health Workers.

The MHU will operate 1–2 days per week to start, with expansion planned based on community demand. Stops will rotate among PBV locations and partner organizations, with the schedule updated weekly to reflect community needs.

“We’re actively seeking community partners, including schools, housing providers, shelters, and nonprofits, who see a need and want to bring care directly to the people they serve,” said Dr. Chris Urbanik, Executive Director for Central City Health. “This initiative is built on collaboration. The more partners we engage, the more lives we can impact.”
