Updated: Man Rescued From Novi House Fire Upgraded to Serious Condition

The man pulled from a house fire at 24144 Wintergreen Circle Tuesday night has been upgraded from critical to serious condition Wednesday afternoon. The man, who is in his 50's and has a disability, is currently being treated at the University of Michigan Burn Center, where he was transported by ambulance after being rescued by Novi firefighters.

The Novi firefighter who was also injured in the fire has now been released from the hospital and is looking to get back to work soon. He was being treated for heat exhaustion at Providence Park Hospital after helping save the man from the fire.

"We're fortunate that everything turned out the way it did," said Novi Director of EMS/Fire Operations Jeff Johnson.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are still being conducted.

The fire began shortly before 8 p.m. and the Novi Fire Department received multiple 911 phone calls at 8:13 p.m., according to the press release. Engines responded from two of Novi’s fire stations, and aid was also provided by the Lyon Township Fire Department.

Nobody besides the man who was rescued was in the house at the time.

The fire was able to be put out by the Novi Fire Department, but the house appears to be completely destroyed, according to a press release from the city of Novi.

Johnson said that when they arrived on the scene, the whole roof of the two-story house was on fire and flames were coming out of the windows.

After hearing that a man was inside the house, a crew went in and used a thermal imaging camera to locate him, while other firefighters started putting the fire out with water.

Sixteen-year-old Maureen Bunney, who lives directly across from the house, was one of the neighbors who called 911.

She said she was doing homework shortly before 8 p.m. when she noticed something outside of her window. After calling the fire department, she continued to watch the scene outside of her house.

“We saw the roof fall right in front of our eyes. It was the scariest thing to see,” she said.

She saw the female who lives in the house arrive home in her car and try to get into the house before the firefighters arrived, but neighbors stopped her.
