Novi Ranks Among Top 20 Safest Places in Michigan

Novi ranks higher than cities like Farmington Hills and Birmingham.

The Movoto Blog, of Movoto Real Estate, recently released its list of the 10 safest places in Michigan. Although the City of Novi didn't make it into the top 10, it is in the top 20.

Out of 102 cities and towns — Grosse Ile Township placing first and Benton Harbor placing last — Novi was selected as the 19th safest place in Michigan. The city was listed just behind Trenton and ahead of places like Farmington Hills and Birmingham. See the full list.

What makes Novi one of the safest?

According to the data compiled by Movoto, residents of Novi, which has a population of 55,623, have a 1 in 51 chance of being the victim of a crime.

Here's a look at the numbers for Novi:
  • Violent crimes per 100,000 residents: 67
  • Property crimes per 100,000 residents: 1,884
  • Total crimes per 100,000 residents: 1,951
  • Chance of violent crime: 1:1,503
  • Chance of property crime: 1:53
  • Chance of crime: 1:51

How were the rankings decided?

Movoto compiled this list by looking at the FBI's report of crime statistics from 2012. See a detailed look at those numbers on Patch.

Researchers selected the cities with a population of 10,000 or more, which led to the total of 102, and looked at each place in terms of three criteria:
  1. Violent crime (rape, murder, assault)
  2. Property crime (theft, burglary, motor vehicle thefts)
  3. The chance a resident will be a victim of crime
For the first two, Movoto's researchers calculated the number of crimes per resident. For the third, they used the total number of crimes in the city. Each city was ranked across the three criteria by placing greater emphasis on violent crimes, followed by property crimes and then the chance a resident might be the victim of a crime. The lower the number, the better the city’s score.
