Henry Ford Hospital audiologist and Novi resident Virginia Ramachandran, Au.D., has been elected president of the Michigan Academy of Audiology, the state’s largest professional group promoting the practice of audiology and advocating to improve the quality of hearing care in Michigan. Her term began Feb. 1.

Ramachandran, a senior staff audiologist in the Division of Audiology, Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery, has been a member of the Michigan Academy of Audiology for four years, serving as its president-elect and treasurer of the executive board.

The Michigan Academy of Audiology, based in Lansing, is designed to enhance the professional autonomy, stature, development and knowledge of audiologists. Its membership consists of about 120 licensed Michigan audiologists.

With an estimated 1.4 million people in the state with hearing loss, Ramachandran will work as president to advocate for the audiology profession and quality care for patients with hearing-related issues. She also will oversee the Michigan Academy of Audiology’s executive board.

In her new role, Ramachandran will serve alongside Henry Ford audiologist Adrianne Fazel, Au.D., who was recently elected president-elect of the Michigan Academy of Audiology. Fazel will become president of the Michigan Academy of Audiology in 2013.

Ramachandran received her Au.D. from Wayne State University, where she is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, teaching courses in audiologic rehabilitation.
