Local Educator Creates Early Literacy Kits to Support Families Across Oakland County
A Lake Orion educator partners with local libraries to provide hands-on literacy tools for families across Oakland County.
Early Childhood Educator Hema, based in Lake Orion, has created a series of Early Literacy Take-Home Kits designed to help families support reading and language development at home. The kits, which are distributed through the Orion Township Public Library, the Rochester Hills Public Library, and preschool family events, offer simple and engaging tools that young children can use with their parents and caregivers.
Each kit includes hands-on materials such as letter activities, fine-motor tools, sensory elements, and early reading prompts. Hema designs the kits using her classroom experience and a teacher’s understanding of what helps young learners build foundational literacy skills in approachable, practical ways. Families have responded enthusiastically, sharing that the kits make reading activities more accessible, fun, and less overwhelming at home.
The initiative continues to grow as more families and community partners express interest. Hema hopes the kits will encourage parents to use everyday moments as opportunities for building language, curiosity, and early learning.
Hema is grateful for the support of the Head of Youth Services at both the Orion Township Public Library and the Rochester Hills Public Library, whose partnership has helped bring these literacy kits to families across the community.
