Police Identify Possible Car In Orion Twp. Road Sign Crash

Police believe a silver or gray 2013-2015 Kia Optima hit a road sign, which then struck and seriously injured​ a man in Orion Township.

ORION TOWNSHIP, MI — Oakland County officials believe they have identified the car that crashed into a road sign, which then struck and seriously injured a man in Orion Township on Tuesday.

Officials are looking for a silver or gray 2013-2015 Kia Optima they believe veered into the center lane on northbound Lapeer Road near Waldon Road and hit the road sign at 7:45 a.m., sending it airborne into southbound traffic.

At the same time, a 31-year-old Lake Orion man was driving a Volkswagen Passat south on Lapeer Road when the road sign smashed through his windshield and hit him, officials said.

The Passat then veered off the road and came to rest next to a tree near Waldon Road, officials said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in serious, but stable condition, officials said. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, officials said.

Investigators believe the Optima should have damage to its front end and possibly a crease in the hood.

Officials do not have any information about the driver who struck the sign. Detectives were still investigating the crash.
