Businesses Damaged in Mall Fire Plan to Reopen

Representatives of Heat & Sweep Fireplace and Barbecue and the Canton Coney Island Catering and Banquet say they're down, but not out, after weekend fire.

Two businesses are temporarily closed after a weekend rooftop fire damaged their businesses in Canton’s Golden Gate shopping center, but both plan to reopen.

Both the Heat & Sweep Fireplace and Barbecue and the Canton Coney Island Catering and Banquet are temporarily closed, The Observer & Eccentric reports. The fire was the resut of a construction accident as workers used a torch to make repairs to the roof, Fire Chief Joshua Meier told the newspaper.

The shopping center is located on North Lilley Road, just south of Johy.

Two workers were temporarily trapped on the roof, but used an emergency ladder to climb down to safety. One worker was treated at the scene by firefighter-paramedics, but declined further medical attention.

On their Facebook page, the owners of Heat & Sweep Fireplace and Barbecue said the business sustained smoke, water and structural damage. Calls are being transferred, and the owners said they’re doing “everything possible” to honor commitments to customers.

“I still have my guys working in the field, and we’re not slowing down on installations, but obviously our showroom is closed,” store manager Butch Primack told Patch.

He expects the store to reopen in “a month or two.”

Canton Coney Island Catering and Banquet owner Fred Hussein said he’s taking the opportunity to remodel his business and give it a new look, as well as a refreshed menu.

The catering and banquet line of his business continues during the closure.

“We had a lot of smoke damage and were required to redo the ceiling and repaint the walls,” he said “We had to get rid of the food in the facility, clean up and make a fresh start.”

He expects to reopen in three to four weeks.
