Canton Library Hosts Iraq Vet and His Assistance Dog
Former U.S. Army Capt. Luis Montalván, now a bestselling author, will speak at the library on Wednesday.

New York Times best-selling author Luis Carlos Montalván and his best friend, Tuesday, will speak at the Canton Public Library, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
Montalván, a former U.S. Army Captain, wrote Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him, as a memoir about his struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the dog, Tuesday, who changed his life for the better.
Montalván served 17 years in the U.S. Army, including two combat tours, before returning home, wounded. He is highly decorated with numerous awards, including two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal for Valor and the Combat Action Badge.
Tuesday also had his own struggles and challenges prior to being partnered with Luis, and the book recounts the story of how two wounded warriors, each who had given so much and suffered the consequences, found salvation in each other.
“I believe Tuesday is a true icon for the future of our wounded warriors and the role of service dogs,” founder of Stiggys Dogs Jennifer Petre said. “As a service dog for a veteran, Tuesday not only helps Luis, but together they work tirelessly to advocate for fellow war heroes. Luis and Tuesday champion others through presentations and public work.”
A major motion picture based on Until Tuesday, as well as an independent full feature documentary titled Buried Above Ground co featuring Captain Montalván, will be released in the near future.
Stiggy’s Dog was the beneficiary of the library’s annual Memorial Day supply drive.
The presentation will take place in the Community Room at the library. The program starts at 6:30 p.m. and will include an author presentation with time for questions and book signing. Books will be available for sale at the library, and all proceeds will go to benefit Stiggy’s Dogs.
