Canton Man Purchases Stolen Car Off Craigslist

A 22-year-old Canton man discovered he had purchased a stolen car during a routine traffic stop in Plymouth Township.

During a traffic stop on April 4, a 22-year-old Canton man discovered he had purchased a stolen car off Craigslist, according to a police report. 

Plymouth Township Police noticed the 2000 silver Pontiac Grand Am driving with out a license plate. The driver told police he had just purchased the car on April 3 and was on his way to Secretary of State to register it," the report said.

The driver provided police with the title of the car, which matched the VIN number. Police discovered the car was listed as stolen out of Detroit on Feb. 20, according to the report.

The man told police he found the car listed for sale on Craigslist and he and his father went to purchase it from another man on Merriman Road in Livonia. The other man told him he was selling the car for his uncle. He is described as being in mid to late 20s, according to the report. 

The car was impounded and a report was submitted to the Livonia Police Department in reference to the incident.
