Canton Plans To Connect Missing Sidewalks Throughout Community: Report

Canton officials plan to connect roughly 54 miles of missing sidewalks to make the community more pedestrian friendly, a report said.

CANTON, MI — Canton Township officials plan to connect roughly 54 miles of missing sidewalks to make the community more pedestrian friendly, according to a report from Hometown Life.

Although Canton officials did not say when construction would start, officials did say they will prioritize school zones first, since 8.7 miles of the missing 54-mile sidewalk gaps were within a quarter-mile of a public or private school in the township, the report said.

Dense areas of population, important gathering areas and whether sidewalks exist on both sides of the road were also some top considerations for the project, the report said. Officials also identified 48 locations that need a bridge for water crossings.

Officials said the project's estimated cost came in between $29 and $46 million, and will be spread out of many years, possibly decades, the report said. The township was expected to receive $750,000 from the state to put toward the project.
