Local Bed & Breakfast Keeps Hospitality Alive in Downtown Plymouth

Kathy and Brian Susick took over the 15-year-old bed and breakfast last October.

When Kathy Susick and her husband Brian walked into 932 Penniman A Bed & Breakfast for her birthday in January 2012, she said it was perfect and she just felt very comfortable there - but she didn't realize she'd own it later that year.

The Susick's purchased the 15-year-old bed and breakfast from its previous owners this past October.

As a former stay-at-home mom whose children were all grown up who sometimes worked for Edwards Café and Caterer, Susick was looking for more to do.

"We were at breakfast table found out it was for sale," she said. "I just felt it was the next chapter in my life."

The former Northville residents sold their house to move into the historic house, built in 1903 by a doctor for his wife.

"It was a big lifestyle change," Susick said. "We're very strong Christians. So I believe that God put me at that table at that moment because I was praying for something. You can only volunteer so many hours, go to lunch so many times. I just needed something. And this is fulfilling it. This is fun."

Susick said she believes the previous owners passed the torch, so to speak.

"There are similarities with them and us, it's almost like it was meant to be," she said. "They were done, retiring and moving on. And we just took over ownership."

Susick is quick to point out that nothing has changed at 932 Penniman. Not even the furniture, which was included in the purchase agreement for the bed and breakfast.

"It was the only way I would consider it," she said. "Could you imagine filling this whole house? You want some of it at least to be period furniture. It took them (previous owners) four years to do all of this before they had their first guest. I couldn't do that."

932 Penniman offers a choice of five rooms, all with their own private bathrooms. Four of the rooms have queen-sized beds, while one suite has a king-sized bed and whirlpool hot tub. Susick offers a full-plated hot breakfast, but also caters to guests wants and needs.

Several of Plymouth-Canton Patch's Facebook fans gave the bed and breakfast great reviews.

Emily Henricks commented, "Stayed there years ago. Loved it, and the porch."

Meredith Sillick wrote, "Wish I knew that when we were first moving here! I'll have to keep this in mind for out of town guests when we can't host them all."

Susick said her favorite part of owning a bed and breakfast are her guests.

"People that go and stay at bed and breakfasts, they're just nice people," she said. "They like the gathering at the breakfast table. You're getting people from all walks of life, so there's usually great conversation - I love listening in."

"It sure isn't cleaning bathrooms," Susick joked.
