Man Arrested After Trying To Steal $25K From Elderly Canton Twp. Woman: Police

Police said the man claimed to be a "senior fraud officer" from the elderly woman's bank.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A man is facing charges in connection with scamming an elderly Canton Township woman, according to police.

Li Biao, 30, was charged with fraudulent false pretenses $20,000-$50,000 (15-year felony) and assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer (2-year felony), according to police.

He was placed in jail with a bond set at $100,000, with GPS tether.

Police said Biao is an illegal foreign national from China.

In mid-December, Biao called the 84-year-old Canton woman and claimed to be a "senior fraud officer" from her bank, according to police.

He told the woman to withdraw large amounts of cash and turn it over to his coworker, who would pick it up from her home, according to police.

The scam was completed on two separate occasions over a four-day period, though police did not say how much money how took from the woman, according to police.

Just before the third attempt, the woman's family noticed the unusual bank activity and contacted the officers, according to police.

On Dec. 17, Biao went to the woman's home to try to get $25,000 in cash from her, but officers were waiting and arrested him in connection with the scam, according to police.
