Memorial Day 2017: Plymouth, Canton Plan Services

Plymouth's parade theme this year is 'Women in the Military.' Canton's services will be at the Veteran's Memorial Center.

PLYMOUTH, MI — Like many communities across southeastern Michigan, Plymouth and Canton will honor America’s Armed Forces men and women this Memorial Day weekend. Services will remember those who fought to uphold the country’s freedom and liberties.

In Plymouth, civic groups are working together on the annual parade, which starts at 9 a.m. on Monday. The parade starts from Wing Street and moves to Veterans Memorial Park in front of the Plymouth Arts and Recreation Center, the Plymouth Observer reported.

“Women in the Military” is this year’s theme and the featured speaker will be U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Krista McKinley, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. The parade is being organized by the Plymouth Lions Club, Passage-Gayde American Legion Post #391, Mayflower Lt. Gamble Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6695 and the Canton-Plymouth Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter #528.

A roll call will also take place for the “Fallen 22,” Marines who were deployed for duty in 2006-07 to Iraq, and made the ultimate sacrifice, the Observer reported. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this memorial service honoring the Marines and all service members, organizers said, “who put our great nation before their own lives — a debt we cannot repay.”
