Relatives Seek Jail Time in Double Fatality in Canton

Grieving relatives asked a 35th District Court judge Monday to hand down a prison sentence to a driver accused of ignoring a flashing red light in Canton, resulting in a two-car crash that , both of Belleville, according to the Canton Observer.

The defense for driver Rufus Thomas Brandon II, 24, argued that Brandon shouldn't be jailed for a decision made while driving his Chevrolet Cavalier southbound through the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Belleville Road just after 2 a.m. on July 24. Brandon's car was hit by a Monte Carlo traveling eastbound on Michigan Avenue.

Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, police said in July.

Brandon faces a Nov. 13 sentencing, where he could face a one-year jail term and probation, the report said. He pleaded no contest Monday to one count of a moving violation causing a death, the report said.
