1 Dead, 1 Hurt In M-59 Crash In Oakland County: Sheriff

Investigators believe the drivers were moving too fast for the icy road conditions.

PONTIAC, MI — A man was killed and another was injured in a Monday crash on M-59 in Oakland County, according to the sheriff's office.

The crash happened at 6 a.m. in the eastbound lanes on M-59 near Martin Luther King Boulevard in Pontiac, officials said.

Officials said two cars, a 2011 Chevy Aveo and a 2015 Chevy Impala, hit an icy patch and swerved off the left side of the road and hit the cable barrier.

A 2004 Dodge Dakota then smashed into the back of the Impala, while the Aveo bounced off the cable barrier and slid back into the center of the road on its side, officials said.

The Aveo was then struck on the roof by a 2018 Ford F150, which was being driven by an 18-year-old Oxford man, officials said.

Three other vehicles also crashed trying to avoid the vehicles involved in the initial crash, officials said.

Officials said the driver of the Aveo, a Pontiac man, was killed in the crash. He was not identified as officials were searching for his next kin.

The driver of the Impala, a 20-year-old Waterford man, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for minor injuries, officials said.

Officials said no other drivers were injured in the crashes. They were all wearing seatbelts.

Investigators do not suspect alcohol, but do believe the drivers were moving too fast for the icy road conditions. They were still investigating the crash.
