Blood Drive in Rochester Extends the Supply

When you need blood, chances are good that it's already spoken for. Blood drive clinics aim to change that.

From Michigan Blood: Someone needs blood every two seconds. That means every time someone lends an arm to donate blood, the pint they give is already spoken for. Michigan Blood partner hospitals understand that what is used needs to be replaced, and many have stepped up to ensure the blood supply is met by hosting local drives. Now, Beaumont Hospital – Troy and Sola Life and Fitness are doing their part, as well, by opening their drives to the community.

“This makes the difference for people in our state,” said Jim Wilson, president of Michigan Blood, “When you donate blood with us, it goes to Michigan hospitals, including Beaumont Health. That means that what you give stays here – and now, people in Southeast Michigan are being helped by their neighbors, as well.”

In other words, blood donors are making connections within their community, and it only costs an hour of their time. For those wanting to extend their bloodline, several blood drives will be taking place throughout the year:

To find a blood drive in your area, visit https://donate.miblood.org. Michigan Blood is the primary provider of blood and blood products for more than 60 hospitals in Michigan, including Beaumont Hospitals, Henry Ford Health Systems, and Michigan Surgical Hospital.

Donations given outside of Michigan Blood do not have direct local impact. Donating blood with Michigan Blood helps save the lives of patients in Michigan hospitals. Any healthy person 17 or older (or 16 with parental consent) who weighs at least 112 pounds may be eligible to donate, although female age 18 and under must weigh 120 pounds or more. Blood donors should bring photo ID. We are currently in urgent need of O-Negative blood donations.
